Samburu National Reserve

If you love safaris, the Samburu National Reserve is a must-see attraction. This game reserve is a popular tourist destination in northern Kenya with its dramatic landscape set against the backdrop of volcanic mountains. The reserve is located within the Rift Valley, 345 km away from Nairobi, and spans approximately 165 square kilometers of land along the Ewaso Ng’iro River. It covers a variety of habitats, including bushland and open savannah grasslands dotted with Acacia trees, which makes it an ideal home for a wide range of species.

Samburu National Reserve is noted for having some of the best leopard sightings in Kenya, as well as rare fauna such as reticulated giraffes, long-necked gerenuk, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostriches, Jackson’s hartebeest, and Baisa oryx. The wildlife park is home to four of the “Big Five,” with the rhino missing.

The reserve was named after the Samburu people, a semi-nomadic tribe, who live above the Equator and inhabit much of north-central Kenya. The ethnic group is related to the Maasai, however, they are not the same. Several private sanctuaries surround the reserve and collaborate with the Samburu people to conserve both their tribal grounds and the surrounding wildlife.
