One Tree Planted Reforestation in Kenya - PD Tours & Safaris

One Tree Planted

One Tree Planted is a non-profit organization dedicated to worldwide reforestation. The organization is planting trees for every US Dollar donated. In Kenya, the organization works directly with local communities to restore Kenyan forests, promote wildlife protection, and foster sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

The forests of Kenya are highland mosaic ‘Afro-alpine’ forests. East African pencil-cedar and African olive were once dominant trees in these locations. Approximately one-third of the original high-canopy forest remains, providing vital habitat for biodiversity.

The Kijabe Forest is one of the forests where One Tree Planted is initiating reforestation. Although it is only around 5,000 hectares in size, it provides water, timber, and agriculture to a community of about 200,000 people.

Rising land demand poses substantial concerns to the region, leading to resource over-extraction and illicit timber harvesting. The project will use agroforestry as a restoration strategy, which will incorporate crop and tree integration. A win-win situation in terms of ecological restoration and community economic empowerment.

One Tree Planted will engage directly with local communities to maintain, conserve, and restore Kenyan forests, thereby helping to safeguard water and other ecosystem services. It will enhance vulnerable rural households’ health and nutrition, promote gender equality by employing more women, and raise crop yield, household income, and food security.

Park Rangers Kenya - PD Tours & Safaris

Mount Kenya Trust

Mount Kenya Trust is a local organization supporting 30 rangers and an estimated 150 livelihoods in and around Mt Kenya National Park and Reserve in Kenya.

Mount Kenya is one of the most stunning landscapes in East Africa, with its rocky glacier-clad summits and forested slopes. The mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its biodiversity, geology, and cultural significance. The Forest Reserve and National Park have a great diversity of habitats that are home to over 1000 plant species, as well as several endemic plants, animals, reptiles, and chameleons. The designation of a World Heritage Site carries with it various responsibilities, one of which is to prevent endangered or rare species from becoming locally extinct.

Rangers help to protect the park and Forest Reserve from direct threats such as illegal logging, poaching, water exploitation, fires, and overgrazing.

Mt Kenya Trust sends out four community ranger teams to collaborate with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the government’s wildlife agency, to prevent poaching and forest destruction on Mt. Kenya. On a daily basis, they tackle tough terrain, high altitudes, and challenging weather conditions in order to maintain Mt Kenya’s ecosystem. They staff their bases year-round and conduct long patrols to assist Kenya Wildlife Services in countering illegal wildlife, timber, and charcoal extraction from the forest and moorland.

The park rangers remove traps and snares and arrest individuals who are illegally in the forest.
